We do workshops throughout the school year, but the most successful method is to take two, three, or even four days. This allows us to really get to grips with the topics and activities, to really get to know the children – and to give them a chance to get to know us and relax.
In both the 2014 winter workshops we featured the rock gongs that form part of a joint project with UCT. Children learned clapping patterns and games, how to make music with sounds like clicking, humming and whistling and how to play percussion on the rock gongs (some of which were transported to Simon’s Town for the Red Hill children to experience.
In the mornings, we had three activities – making books on the iPads, composing and then performing their own songs, with their own words and making and then working with shadow puppets on San-themed stories.
