A workshop for teacher-librarians and readers

Franschhoek Toolbox Workshop: 10 September
This workshop is an invitation to explore ideas about bringing books to children – and children to books,

Background:

CBN has had the toolboxes in its sights for three years now, and we have tested all the books and activities during our workshops. What you will see today is the result of a great deal of hard work and planning.

The concept:

Workshops are not school. Children come to our workshops voluntarily and in their recreational time. We hope they are going to see that reading is the most critical skill they can acquire, but they are going to do this by having fun. Fun remains one of the most important words in the CBN vocabulary.

We also give children a non-judgemental, non-threatening platform to succeed at something and not be measured against others. Books in the toolboxes cover several levels of reading – and the children choose what they wish to read in the plentiful free reading time. Activities ore not competitive. Play is the most crucial part of the day and reading is introduced in everything they do as an essential part of life itself. Our books are chosen around dynamic themes and are supported by activities and visiting experts and volunteers.
