Mini-workshop for International Children’s Book Day

p4027582

Local rock-art guide David van der Westhuizen joined CBN for the first – but not the last – time to talk to the workshop participants from Grades 7 & 8 (and some enthusiastic others!) about the rock art in the Cederberg and elsewhere.

Part of the on going archaeological project to rescue artefacts ahead of the raising of the Clanwilliam Dam wall will involve recording rock art and moving some irreplaceable examples to safety. The children of Clanwilliam will be hearing a lot more about this heritage that is all around them, and this talk served as an introduction. They will also be visiting the excavations and recording sites and learning more throughout the year.

Bringing matters back to books, Lesley read to the children from a children’s book called Waiting for Rain (co-written with Dr Megan Biesele) that shows how life has changed for hunter gatherers living in modern times.

We also read and discussed the IBBY piece written by children’s author Marwa Al Aqroubi in honour of the day.
