CBN Super-Books!

p6049251

The Super-Books are an integral part of the toolboxes – and sooner or later, we have to fix the titles we will be including. This is hard! In fact it is so hard that arm-wrestling may have to take place. We want the children to have the best of the best – both South African and African and from the rest of the world. The latter tend to be expensive, so we shall be asking writers and publishers to give permission for us to use extracts. Where we can, we will include hard copies of at least some of the Super-Books. It will be a process of consultation.

Examples of Super-Books we are considering right now are:

South African Books

• Fly Eagle Fly (Christopher Gregorowski
• Ouma Ruby’s Secret (Chris van Wyk)
• Mazenendaba and the magical story shell (Gcina Mhlophe)
• The Day Gogo went to vote (Eleanor Sisulu)
• Nicholas and the Wild Ones (Niki Daly)
• Home Now (Lesley Beake)
• Makwane and the Crocodile (Maria Hendriks and Piet Grobler)
• Kgalagadi Tales (Hanneke du Preez)

Books from around the world

• Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate (USA)
• Wolf Brother by Michelle Paver (Britain)
• Tar Beach by Faith Ringold (USA)
• Willy’s Stories by Anthony Brown (Britain)
• The Django by Levi Pinfold (Britain)
• Inside out and back again by Thanhha Lai (USA/Vietnam)
• A Child’s Garden by Michael Foreman (Britain)
• Shh! We have a plan (and others) by Chris Haughton

We have used all of these books (and hundreds more) in our workshops. Some are more challenging, some are fun books to relax the children and get them laughing. All of them work. The final choice will be down to what we can afford and what books we receive permission to take extracts from.
